Carl Sandburg College’s Corporate & Leisure College has partnered with CareerStep, an online provider of career-focused education and professional training, to help people work toward a rewarding new career as a pharmacy technician.

The program includes videos, interactive games and simulations, giving students the benefit to experience real-life situations during their training. Students also will fulfill a required externship, with opportunities provided through CareerStep’s partnerships with Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy.

The pharmacy technician program includes 12 months of course access and costs $2,999. Students may qualify for need-based funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). For more information and an initial questionnaire, call the WIOA Knox County office at 309.343.9832. Illinois residents living outside of Knox County may also call that number for inquiries.

In addition to one-on-one support from experienced instructors throughout the duration of the course, individual student advocates to help them along the way and access to personalized graduate support after completing the program, students also receive a lab kit, e-books and a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam voucher upon graduation.

Pharmacy technicians work closely with pharmacists to dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals. The median annual wage for pharmacy technicians was $33,950 in May 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 4 percent from 2019-2029.
